Do you like this excerpt?
Now of course I know there will be common mistakes in this and that you won’t know who the characters are, but it’s a small excerpt out of the whole thing mainly taking place at the very beginning of the story.Genres are Horror/Sci-Fi; might not seem like it from the excerpt, but it is.Title to give you an idea is Give Me One Reason to Smell a RoseIt might sound like a comedy from the title, but actually it’s something one of the characters say in the story. It is also a hint or clue to a problem that the main character has to solve which you would have to read more of to find out.Constructive criticism is fine. Enjoy! The scent of coffee beans eluded him away from the cold air sweeping across his face from the open window. He slowly shuffled his feet one at a time out of the bed and planted them on the bitter carpeted floor. About to investigate the delightful smell, he heard a call coming from the suite’s kitchen,“Are you up yet—,” Kasha yelled“I made breakfast”“I’m awake, but if I come out there perforated leather machine and your eggs are on the stove I’m jumping out the living room window nine stories to hopefully my death”“No, I got something else on, you know—the rednecks perfect breakfast”Bacon slept on a skillet with the grease bubbling on the sides and the meat scrunched itself up. Freshly made coffee sat on the breakfast bar in one of the hotels mugs giving him that at home feeling. Laces of steam rose out of the mug and met with the cool air, dragging it back out the window. He grasped the handle of the mug and sipped it slowly.“Ahhh damn”“It’s just burn nothing to make a riot over”“It was just the abruptness of it, not that it didn’t sting though,” he explained to herTiny blisters formed on the tip that he kept scraping with his teeth.“Where’d you put the ID’s?” he asked“There in the glove compartment down in the car, why?”“We’ll need them to check into another hotel if we need to stop on the way back to Portland”“Oh, well that definitely makes sense”Kasha’s back was now turned to him, her golden wheat hair intertwined in four lace braids, her slim figure not quite hourglass, her gentle hands so placid you could never catch them shaking.Sadly her looks didn’t fit with her story, nor did his concept of living fit with his. It was by chance that they met. Her parents were straight up dead, killed in a shootout at some local retailer store in Chicago. His parents kicked him out three years ago when they decided they’d rather travel the world, yet he always thought they despised going on trips. Both of them looking for a place to go, him fourteen at the time and she thirteen they mistakenly got put at the same booth at a diner on the corner of 5th, back in Portland. He blew on his coffee and sat on the perforated leather chair next to the bay window and looked down at the river. The river was what separated them from the other half of the city as to where the only way of getting there was to cross one of the two bridges or come from the west. He gulped down the last bit of warm coffee, ate his cooled bacon, and sighed.
