Absolutely, although a woodburning Iron works better (or see above for special leather kit) Both will have the better tips. Also, Look up Leather Pyrography on the web. The only downside to soldering irons is the long hot shank, and higher temperatures. Woodburners have the insulation down close to the tip so it’s easier to control. Either will burn leather & flesh! So be careful.

In the State of New York she would be charged with Criminal Mischief. The degree of Criminal Mischief would depend on monetary value of the damage that was caused. Anything over $250.00 would be a felony here.

Try an auction house for an appraisal. I put a link for a good one below. They often give appraisals for free. Not sure how to care for leather – I don’t hink you can put saddle soap on a painting, right?
